What is a Gerontologist?

Gerontologists are highly trained professionals who specialize in the field of aging, usually with a master's degree and additional training in specialized areas.

In order to help an aging individual and their loved ones prepare for and cope with the aging process, a gerontologist will complete a comprehensive evaluation that minimally includes a review of medical conditions, cognitive and behavioral changes, financial resources, and family dynamics.  The evaluation will be used to create an all-encompassing life care plan that will provide specialized guidance for the support of the individual, family, and others involved.

Many gerontologists offer the additional service of care management. Care management allows families and professionals to remain informed and involved, while the care manager arranges for services and provides oversight of the life care plan. This may include arranging for in-home support, or alternative living options, coordination of medical care, crisis intervention, and monitoring of quality support services.
